Peeling Potato The Easy Way

I like to share information that makes life more joyful and meaningful. My main interests are health and general wellness in body and mind.

Peeling potatoes is always a time-consuming job

This article rightfully should not be called "peeling potato" because the method saves you from the actual peeling with a peeler. Maybe the title should be "peeling potato without actually peeling" or "how to skin a potato without using a peeler".

You would have seen the videos many times before. Good on you. Maybe some may not have seen them yet, or some may have forgotten all about it. For me, I've forgotten all about it, until someone sent me an email to refresh my memory. So I think it is a good idea to present it here for posterity, hopefully.

The method is very simple and easy. It only requires you to make a small cut across the potato, then put it in a pot of boiling water. While waiting for another 15 minutes for the potato to be cooked, you need to prepare a basin or pot of iced cold water with ice cubes. When the potato is cooked, take it out and immediately submerge it in the pot of iced cold water. Wait for 10 seconds, then take the potato out and just press and slide the skin out, as shown in the video. If you have plenty of potatoes to peel, this will be a faster method to skin them, instead of the tedious hand-peeling with a peeler.

Peeling potato is such a common chore that after some time even knowing an easier way, we tend to revert to our old habitual way of peeling potato. This actually happened to me. Strange, but true. Thinking back, I might know the reason. You see, when you usually peel only one or two potatoes once in a while and not everyday, you tend to just get straight to it with a peeler; and get done with it. Over time, you forget about the easier method. Perhaps if you need to peel 5 or more potatoes everyday, then this "10-second" method is definitely very time-saving.

This topic may be more relevant to Caucasians whose staple diet is potatoes, where peeling potatoes is a daily chore. For us Asians, potatoes are not our staple diet, so we don't spend too much time peeling potatoes, and certainly not every day. As for me and my wife, there are only two of us in the house. Even if we cook potatoes, they would only be 3 or 4 small ones. It would be faster for me just to peel them with a peeler. Also take note that the procedure requires boiling the potatoes. So if your cooking does not require boiling the potatoes then this procedure is not suitable.

Peeling potato : The "10-second" method

The videos below show you the step-by-step method on how to peel a potato in 10 seconds. But as would see, you need to prepare an iced-cold water to do the job. So it is not actually 10 seconds for the whole operation. Only the peeling part is. If you have only a few potatoes to peel, my opinion is that it is more practical and faster to hand peel them.

The first video has been watched more than 11million times! So there you are. It is definitely not something new and recent.

On a lighter note, just in case you don't understand American accent, try the last video in Japanese! (LOL)
