Important Assurance First

This is not going to be a nice topic, “Why people commit suicide?”. Before proceeding further, I better assure all my relatives and friends that I am definitely not contemplating suicide. This is not a laughing matter, especially those who know my present circumstances. So relax and read on, if you are still interested in the topic, “Why people commit suicide?”.

Even Animals Commit Suicide

Seeing people committing suicide is a very terrifying and traumatic event. Why did they succumb to such a terrifying act? Do you know; even animals commit suicide? We often read in the news that certain sea species for apparently no good reason, just beached to die there. I once saw in a film about deep sea fishing. And this was the most pathetic and evil act inflicted by humans on sea creatures. I think only humans have this obnoxious trait of hurting others on purpose. I think it had something to do with some big fishes, maybe some big tuna or shark species. I have forgotten, but never mind; this is the story. This group of despicable “fishermen” successfully hooked up a big fish. They somehow knew something would follow, I supposed from previous experiences. Then on the water another fish seemed to be begging to be hauled up. I remember this scene for the rest of life. It was hauled up and left to die with its mate. I am sure this is still happening today, right at this very moment. SIGH!

I Have Known Enough Of Suicide Cases

Throughout my lifetime, I have heard enough of people committing suicide. Lucky for me, I have not personally witnessed a suicide case, although I know of a number of people whom I personally knew, who had committed suicide. These include a few friends whom I knew personally. One was my classmate committed suicide. Another was a member of the same youth club we were active in. Another colleague used a mechanical bow on himself, but lucky for him, he survived. The other, whom I knew all the members of the family, jumped from a high-rise building. To add to my sad list, a brother of a lawyer friend also jumped from a high-rise building. Then there was this relative of mine who jumped from yet another high-rise apartment. Looks like high-rise buildings are the most convenient places to jump. It is very scary and very sad. What made them take such a drastic and desperate action?

From the above cases which I knew, let us take a look at what went wrong. There were the work related suicides, which might be the stress or inter-personal problems. One involved investigation of corruption. Then there was another case of secret personal problem no one would ever know why. There was this case relating to severe depression due to acute chronic illness. Whatever might be the reasons or causes, it must have very greatly affected the victims for a certain period of time before the final decision was taken.

There was this very odd reason for committing suicide. One old couple decided to take the plunge. Yes, jumping from high-rise building again. It was found out later that the reason for the elderly couple’s suicide was that they did not want to be a hindrance to their children. This was most tragic. I greatly suspected that the stupid idea must have come from the old man; and the poor wife had to follow suit. What a tragedy!

One very sorrowful suicide case involved a prominent retired judge. His love for his deceased wife was annually "advertised" in full page in our local newspaper on her death anniversaries. He was a very learned scholar and judge, and his full page advertisements were always in Latin conveying his undying and eternal love for his beloved wife. Then one lonely night: BANG!! He shot himself, out of utter loneliness and despair. This is life; or was it death?

Orchestrated Suicides

Then we have the orchestrated suicides. What are these? Suicides as act of passion, act of “honor”, act of political beliefs and the latest act of terrorism. Another horrible form of suicide is self-immolation.

Act of passion suicides always have “interesting” stories behind them, although always tragic. Parental or some silly cultural objections would be the likely cause of suicides out of act of passion. Heard of Harakiri? Yes, those crazy and horrible Japanese self-disembowelment suicide rituals. It is a type of act of “honor” suicide. Finally, those suicides caused by political beliefs, which are so rampant nowadays, and affecting innocent lives as well. It is madness!

Last Word Of Advice

If you are contemplating suicide, stop and think of your loved ones. Even if you think you have none, then look towards the end of the tunnel. There is light at the end over there. Just hold on. Just think of those unfortunate people who are fighting to stay alive every second. Continue to live. If you think your case is hopeless, think twice. “Hopeless” starts with the word “HOPE”. There is hope, my friend. I can do it, so can you.
